From Corriera Dello Sera:

C'è poco da discutere, sul gol annullato a Toni ieri sera ho sbagliato: l'ho anche detto alla commissione arbitri Uefa

Roughly translated: "Not much for me to say, with regards to the Luca Toni goal that was waived off, I fucked up (ok, said he made an error). I even told the UEFA referee commision"

Yeah, you FUCKED UP alright! Can we say INSTANT REPLAY PLEASE!!!!

That goal might have cost Italy the tournament (not to mention me and a few other backers some coin) This ref should be fired and never ref a meaningful soccer game again.

He made a mistake, but he doesn't deserve to be fired. It's not easy making those calls. It was a VERY close play and he had to make a call, so he did. I was on Italy too, but I understand the decision and don't blame him for the loss. If Italy could finish better they wouldn't of had to worry about that because they had plenty of other chances.

They should beat France though, but I think Romania might sneak out a win against the Dutch to send the Italians home.

FIFA should seriously considering adding instant replay, they already have a 4th ref that could easily do this. These plays are too hard to make in fractions of a second.

too hard? It is physiologically impossible to watch the line and a guy kick the ball at the same time. Platini and Blatter are half retarded with their refusal to move to replay. If 75% of games have goals incorrectly allowed or disallowed that is low.

But it wont stop at offsides...fouls, corners and bullshit stuff throw-ins, etc. would also have to be replayed, players will ask for it, the flow of the game would be broken by that. The subjectivity and flaws of the ref are a part of the game.

They could do it for the relevant stuff only, things that really change the outcome of the game. Like goals scored by players that are offsides or viceversa. Goals where they are not 100% sure the ball crossed the line completely. Penalty kicks, specially where players flop to get a call. Fouls where there might be doubts on a red card.

With a ref sitting in the sidelines and a good set up, this shouldn't take too long. Not longer than it takes for an injured player to get medical attention on the field, or to get him off the field. How long does it take for the tv broadcasters to give us instant replay? Why can't the sideline ref have access to this replays? Have him look at the play 2 or 3 times, 30 seconds, and then make the call. They are usually very conclusive.

Why bother with corner kicks, throw-ins, insignificant fouls, etc? I'm sure everyone can live with a few bad calls here. Don't give the players the power to challenge plays. With the proper rules on the subject the flow of the game shouldn't suffer too much and justice on the field would be served.

Too many teams get screwed on bad calls that change the outcome of the game.

Jack,
You need to stop hijacking my email. I swear that is the exact same position I take every time I have this discussion with someone. Very easy and little disruption to the game if done well, just let the play continue and if a goal is scored, let the 4th official look at it. Most times he will have an answer before the team is done celebrating/arguing.

LOL. I agree. It just makes sense to me. By far more benefits than negative things with the inclusion of instant replay.
